Join us to discuss a few thought-provoking titles about the interconnected relationship we have with our shared home, planet Earth. This group will span the months of February, March, and April leading up to the globally recognized Earth Day on April 22. We will discuss three works of nonfiction. Join us for as many sessions you’d like!

Our April title is Paper Valley: The Fight for the Fox River Cleanup  by David Allen. When government scientist David Allen arrived at his new job site in the 1990s, the Fox River near Wisconsin's Green Bay was dominated by hulking paper mills, noxious industrial odors, and widespread ecological damage. Confronted by his lack of resources, Allen proceeds against all bureaucratic odds in building a $1 billion case against the paper companies. In a rare and major environmental win, the Fox River became the site of the largest polychlorinated biphenyls cleanup in history, paid for by the paper companies rather than taxpayers, and completed in 2020. This true story of struggle, perseverance, and success inspires hope for environmentalists who strive to restore natural landscapes.

Here are the selections for each month:

February Title: The Carbon Footprint of Everything by Mike Berners-Lee (2022)

March Title: A Wing and a Prayer: The Race to Save Our Vanishing Birds by Anders Gyllenhaal (2023)

April Title: Paper Valley: The Fight for the Fox River Cleanup (Great Lakes Book Series) by David Allen (2023)

Please note: Print copies of each title are available at the Library's Circulation Desk one month in advance of each discussion. Paper Valley: The Fight for the Fox River Cleanup is also available as an eBook through Hoopla.
