Join us for a unique educational field trip to a special place in our neck of the woods, the Labyrinth & Cosmic Walk on the campus of Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart here in Frankfort, IL. Sister Mary Barbara Hassler will guide the tour. 

The Labyrinth is an archetype found in all spiritual traditions in various forms around the world across time. By walking the replica of the Chartres Labyrinth, an ancient circular diagram laid in the floor of Chartres Cathedral around 1220, you will have an opportunity to experience what is considered a mystical tradition & physical meditation, as well as a tool for present moment awareness.

Arranged in 27 stations, the Cosmic Walk is an opportunity to contemplate the mystery of creation & unfolding of the Universe that has been at work for thirteen billion years, and to help you experience the awe and wonder of life as you know it today. People are encouraged to walk both sites with an open mind and an open heart. Please feel free to bring a journal to record your reflections. 

About the Presenter

Sister Mary Barbara has been a member of the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart for 48 years, holds a degree in Spirituality from Loyola University, and is an educator and spiritual director. She is a nature lover and enjoys hiking in forest preserves, and state & national parks.

Where to Meet

The address for Portiuncula Center for Prayer is 9263 W. St. Francis Road, Frankfort, Illinois 60423. You can access the campus from West St. Francis Road at Woods Drive, the fourth entrance at the eastern end of the campus. We will meet in the parking lot at the end of the road. We will walk to the labyrinth from the parking lot to begin our tour.

Please Note:

  • Both the Labyrinth and Cosmic walk consist of small gravel walking paths and are not wheelchair accessible. Those who sign up need to be able to walk on their own without assistance.
  • This is an 18+ adult program.
  • We will cancel the program in the event of rain and do our best to reschedule if necessary.
