Safe Start is a violence prevention program offered by the Crisis Center of South Suburbia and designed to educate 7th-12th grade students about prevention techniques that can help them avoid relational and behavioral issues that typically result in violence. Safe Start is designed to achieve the following objectives: improve student's' violence literacy, assist them in developing risk-avoidance and risk-reduction behaviors, and encourage positive socioemotional skills that lead to healthier relationships and interactions.

Four sessions will be offered through May. This session will discuss:

  • identifying dating violence, unhealthy relationships, understanding the cycle of violence, and red flags
  • recognizing alternatives to violent thoughts and behaviors to establish and maintain positive relationships
  • determining non-violent alternatives to create better long term outcomes in personal and social contexts

Upcoming sessions:

  • Thursday, March 16, 7pm: Strategies for Resolving Conflict
  • Thursday, April 27, 7pm: Responding to Conflict
  • Thursday, May 11, 7pm: Rising Above Cultural Norms that Promote Violence
