Join us to discuss The Fishermen and the Dragon by Kirk Wallace Johnson
Intertwined narratives explore the struggles of a small fishing community on the Gulf Coast in the decades following the Vietnam War. An influx of Vietnamese refugees were met with fear and hostility, leading to a showdown between the KKK and the fledgling Southern Poverty Law Center. Meanwhile, the economically depressed area had been offering tax incentives and waste permits for chemical manufacturers to build plants along the coast, bringing much needed jobs. As the years passed, one local woman took note of alarming changes happening in the environment and began battling these major corporations, fighting with them and often her own neighbors to save the waters that she loved.
