Join us to discuss Battle of Ink and Ice: A Sensational Story of News Barons, North Pole Explorers, and the Making of Modern Media by Darrell Hartman
In 1909 the world celebrated the announcement that an expedition led by Robert Cook and funded by the New York Herald had become the first to reach the North Pole. Excitement turned to chaos a week later when the New York Times printed a telegram from William Peary, leader of a separate expedition funded by the Times, claiming that Cook was a fraud and that Peary had in fact, been the one to reach the Pole. The controversy entangled scientific societies, universities, and governments, and was the culmination of decades of rivalry among New York City newspapers.
