Join us to discuss Daughters of the Flower Fragrant Garden by Zhuqing Li
Li tells her family’s story through the lives of her two remarkable half-aunts. Coming of age during the second World War, the elder sister, Hong, studied medicine while the younger, Jun, trained to be a teacher. When the civil war between the Communist and Nationalist regimes severed access between Taiwan and mainland China, Jun, who had traveled to the island for a job interview, found herself completely cut off from the rest of the family. She would have to make a life for herself on Nationalist Taiwan, while Hong would navigate the turbulent changes brought by the new Communist government. It would be many decades before the sisters would see each other again.
